July 2012 ~ Freedom 

As we celebrate our country’s independence this week, it is a good time to think about what Freedom means to us.

Our ancestors came to this country in order to be free to pursue their own lives.  As we all learned in school, the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, declared our intent to be free:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

This document, signed by the representatives of the 13 original colonies, sets out the early foundation of our country in a way that had never been done before.

As we go forward in a new year, it is important to consider what is important to each of us as individuals, what is important to us as a family and as a community, and what is important to us a country.

We stand on the precipice of a new way of life every year.  As time passes, our needs change and yet, we continue to hold basic truths to be critically important to our way of life.  We hold those truth to be self-evident.  

How we live, how we pursue our religion, how we educate our children and the values we hold dear don’t happen by accident.  They happen because we make a commitment to certain values and ideals that are important to us.  

As we celebrate this week with picnics, family gatherings, fireworks and sunshine, we hope each of you will take time to think about what is important to you and how dear those freedoms are to us.  

Our ancestors gave up their homes to come to this country, and later, many gave up their lives to protect the freedom we hold dear so that we could live a life that allows for freedom of thought, action and belief.  It is up to us to continue to carry those ideals forward into the future,  and teach our children to value our freedoms and to appreciate how significant they really are.  

May your July and your July 4th celebration be filled with fun, family and freedom — where ever you are in the world.
